History and Heroines of Montmartre

…come meet the ladies of the city’s historic playground

Arguably the city's most charming neighbourhood today, this formerly rural hillside was once the haunt of the avant-garde. Modernist artists Picasso, Van Gogh, Matisse and Toulouse Lautrec all spent time living in what was then the rough side of town, which nevertheless offered a Parisian Playground; famous for its alluring cabarets, brothels and cheap wine.

On this tour we'll explore both the history of the neighbourhood; how it transformed from a rural shantytown into one of the city's most desirable quarters today, and the artists and revolutionaries who lived here. We'll pay particular attention to the women we find in their artworks; revealing their fascinating stories, as well as some of the women working behind the scenes to bring us some of the greatest works of art of the last century. Along the way we'll also make a stop to try a tasty middle-eastern inspired treat from a modern and woman-owned pâtisserie.
