Drama Queens

This tour angles the spotlight on some of the dramatic heroines of the Parisian stage, in theatre and music and film.

Historically the career of actor was viewed with such distain in France that they were denied most of their civil rights and women who took to the stage were considered as little more than glorified sex workers. However, as the public’s taste for entertainment grew and Paris gained its reputation as the capital of art and culture during the Belle Epoque, "les artistes" began to take centre stage.

Whilst other tours might focus on the scandal and sensation of this illustrious age, this walking tour seeks to uncover the real lives of the women who played a role in it, recognising in particular their accomplishments, art and legacies.

The tour begins by the famous Comédie Française theatre and weaves through the historic theatre district of Paris, exploring beloved superstars like Josephine Baker and Mata Hari as well as some lesser known figures like Alice Guy Blaché, pioneer of early film.
